Art and Politics

Presentation for Week 4 – Focused on Diego Rivera

interested in the weaving of art into government and political contexts – and if working for government lessens the power of the message.

Acrylic boards approx. 60cmx60cm

you can see in the first two images the translucency of the white acrylic that I really enjoy – opens up a lot of opportunities to play with light

As shown – the dremel attempts. I could not keep under control – will need some sort of guide or use another process. I have more panels to use for a final and experiment on these.

Formative/Critique

Unfortunately I did not have a good way of communicating my visual idea without the completed mock panels – and fumbled my way through all the different relationships the panels should have to each other in space. I am tempted to just do a paint job on the current panels to begin thinking about interactions with lighting.

Most of the Critique was getting options for ways to cut into acrylic board with the precision/cleanness I want. I think the next step is figuring out which of the few laser cutters at Uni will allow me to do this work and if I need to learn new programs etc. I should have a chat with the peeps at the industrial design workshop. I have faith I will able to see my vision through in the next six weeks.

I asked for some art references to look at, considering I was struggling to find work specific to the area. These artists were mentioned based off their use of words in work:

Joseph Kasouth, Colin McCahon, Emily karaka, May Louise Brown, Barbara Krueger, Phillip Clairmont, and Ralph Hotere

I am happy having so many people to look at and maybe this can help modify or resolve any of my ideas. ‘

I am currently trying to learn Blender – 3D modelling software – So I can make a flythrough of a gallery space to give a feel for what the installed work will be like if I cannot do so in person. I think It is important to have at least some fall backs from the physical medium – though I would prefer if I could make an installation in person.

I was really interested in the work everyone was doing – there was a large diversity in media and message that is very welcome – I felt the most lacking of the show and tells we did.

this last book is my most interesting find – it details the use of art in a similar commission that took place in Canada – but I think it is about art responding to the effects of the trauma not about the process itself?
